Regisseuse Adela Sequeyro schreef dit stoutmoedige melodrama en speelt zelf bovendien de rol van Ana María die haar beklemmende haciënda ontvlucht voor een bohemien leven vol romantiek en intriges. Met gevatheid, stijl en durf eist ze haar vrijheid terug. La Mujer de Nadie was en is een baanbrekend verhaal over vrouwelijke autonomie op het witte doek. Tegen de achtergrond van de jaren 30, een periode waarin de Mexicaanse filmsector zichzelf nog aan het definiëren was, positioneerde Sequeyro’s film de vrouw niet als moreel symbool, maar als een actief subject.

Dit stoutmoedige melodrama is de eerste door een vrouw geregisseerde geluidsfilm in Mexico. Door middel van expressieve close-ups, minimale dialoog en destijds provocerende camerahoeken verkent Sequeyro een specifiek vrouwelijk erotisch universum, waarin, zoals de titel trots verklaart, een vrouw van niemand kan zijn. Een radicale bewering in een cultuur waarin vrouwen altijd van iemand toebehoorden, of het nu als moeder, dochter, echtgenote of sekswerker was.
