Archives in Dialogue: Transnational Solidarity in Cinema

Een groot aantal anti-koloniale, anti-imperialistische en anti-fascistische films die werden gemaakt in de jaren 60 en 70 van de vorige eeuw werden grotendeels gemarginaliseerd in filmstudies, filmprogramma’s en de filmindustrie. Deze afwezigheid van de politieke praktijken in cinema worden achterhaald en vertaald door verschillende archiefpraktijken rond deze films en geschiedenissen.

De eerste aflevering van Archives in Dialogue zal gaan rondom onderzoekers en archivisten Annabelle Aventurin en Léa Morin, die hun project Non-Aligned Film Archives komen presenteren. Vertrekkend vanuit onvoltooide films en verloren archieven die in de vergetelheid zijn geraakt binnen het dominante narratief van de filmgeschiedenis, is het project een herstellend gebaar om het potentieel van deze onderdrukte werken terug te winnen. Aventurin en Morin brengen verschillende films samen, sommige waarvan recentelijk gerestaureerd.

Het dialoog wordt georganiseerd door leden van de Future Archive onderzoeksgroep aan KASK School of Arts, om de discussie rond het proces van politieke filmografieën doorheen de praktijk van transnationale solidariteit in cinema verder te helpen. Het gesprek zal gevolgd worden door een deels 16mm screening van een selectie van films van de Ciné-Archives en Talitha Collection. Deze screening is een opstapje naar de Non-Aligned Film Archives screenings in het l’Âge d’or weekend in CINEMATEK.

The number of films that were made in relation with the anti-colonial, anti- imperialists, anti-fascist political struggles around the world produced between 60’s and 70’s of the 20th century, represents a sustainable filmic body that is been widely and systematically, marginalized, wither in film studies, film programs, r film industries. This absence, or discontinuity of the political practices in the cinema, are traced and translated through the several archival practice around these films and histories.

Archives in dialogue first episode will be with the researchers and archivists Annabelle Aventurin and Léa Morin, to present their project Non-Aligned Film Archives, which is built upon unfinished films or lost archives that were marginalized within the dominant narrative of cinema history, their project offers a reparative gesture by reclaiming the potential of these minority works. They bring together other films, some of which have been recently restored.

The dialogue is hosted by members of the Future archive cluster at KASK School of Arts in Ghent, to bring further the discussion around the process of producing political filmographies and inventories throughout the practices of transnational solidarity in cinema, the dialogue will be followed by a partly 16mm screening of a selection of films from the Ciné-Archives and Talitha collection. This screening aims to be a threshold to the “Non-Aligned Film Archives” screening programs at l'Âge d'or weekend at the Cinematek.
