Diamantino (2018)

De wereldberoemde Portugese voetbalster Diamantino is een genie op het veld, maar daarbuiten ontbreekt het hem aan vrijwel elke vorm van intelligentie. Wat hij wél in overvloed heeft, is empathie. Nadat hij met zijn jacht een boot vluchtelingen redt, raakt hun tragedie hem zo diep dat hij het winnende schot mist in de WK-finale.Wat volgt is een koortsachtige odyssee langs neofascisme, de vluchtelingencrisis, genetische manipulatie en een absurde zoektocht naar de bron van genialiteit. Als oplossing voor zijn verwoestende verlies adopteert Diamantino een Mozambikaanse tienerjongen die in werkelijkheid een volwassen lesbische vrouw blijkt, undercover bij de overheid. Ondertussen smeden zijn kwaadaardige tweelingzussen financiële complotten, probeert een gestoorde wetenschapper hem te klonen en denderen er gigantische puppy’s door het verhaal.

Regisseurs Gabriel Abrantes en Daniel Schmidt spreken terecht van een anarchie van referenties die reikt van Guy Maddins lo-fi surrealisme tot Jeff Koons’ suikerzoete indecentie. Borrelend van de waanzin van de moderne wereld suggereert de film een uitweg die (verrassing!) iets te maken heeft met kiezen voor liefde boven apathie of uitbuiting.

Deze vertoning wordt voorafgegaan door de kortfilm ça ne marche pas (2013) van Simon Lynen en ingeleid door filmkenner en cinemascheidsrechter Dario Rens.

ENGLISH World-famous Portuguese footballer Diamantino is a genius on the pitch, but off it he lacks almost any form of intelligence. What he does have in abundance is empathy. After rescuing a boatload of refugees with his yacht, their tragedy affects him so deeply that he misses the winning shot in the World Cup final. What follows is a feverish odyssey through neo-fascism, the refugee crisis, genetic manipulation and an absurd search for the source of genius. As a solution to his devastating loss, Diamantino adopts a Mozambican teenage boy who turns out to be an adult lesbian woman, undercover for the government. Meanwhile, his evil twin sisters forge financial conspiracies, a deranged scientist tries to clone him, and giant puppies thunder through the story.

Directors Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt rightly speak of an anarchy of references ranging from Guy Maddin's lo-fi surrealism to Jeff Koons' sugar-sweet indecency. Bubbling with the madness of the modern world, the film suggests a way out that (surprise!) has something to do with choosing love over apathy or exploitation.
