Weird Wednesday: Danger: Diabolik (1968)

Weird Wednesday pakt haar koffer met een campy crime caper zonder weerga. Vergeet James Bond en open je hart voor Diabolik: een meesterdief die in strak latex de onderwereld verovert. Vergezeld van zijn vriendin Eva Kant en voorzien van een arsenaal aan hightech snufjes, plant deze suave supercrimineel een reeks verbluffende heists die menig wetshandhaver hun hoed laat eten. Wanneer zijn oog valt op een gegaarde goudvoorraad, stuit onze antiheld echter op een uitdaging die zijn listigheid tot het uiterste drijft.

Dat Danger: Diabolik ontsproten is uit het brein van giallo grootmeester Mario Bava hoeft niet te verbazen. Gebaseerd op Italiaanse stripboeken en stille cinema schurken als Fantomas en Irma Vep, is de film Bava’s ode aan de poëzie van de pulp. Danger: Diabolik rijgt dan ook een reeks stilistische sensaties aan elkaar die je ogen uitsteken van vormelijk vuurwerk. Als pop art explosie brandt de film van psychedelische visuals en absurdistische waaghalzerij, allemaal op een ronkende pop soundtrack van Ennio Morricone. Een duivelse traktatie om het seizoen mee af te sluiten.

Accompanied by his girlfriend Eva Kant and armed with an arsenal of high-tech gadgets, this suave super-criminal plans a series of stunning heists that leave many a law enforcement officer eating their hat. When his eye falls on a substantial hoard of gold, however, our anti-hero faces a challenge that pushes his cunning to the limit.

It comes as no surprise that Danger: Diabolik sprang from the mind of giallo master Mario Bava. Based on Italian comic books and silent-era villains such as Fantomas and Irma Vep, the film is Bava’s ode to the poetry of pulp. Danger: Diabolik strings together a series of stylistic sensations that will make your eyes pop with visual fireworks. Like a pop art explosion, the film blazes with psychedelic visuals and absurdist daring, all set to a roaring pop soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. A devilish treat to round off the season.
