Kinoclub #52: Teorema1968

This masterpiece by Pier Paolo Pasolini is based on a simple premise: ‘What if Christ were to return as a sexy anarchist in tight-fitting jumpers?’ One day, a mysterious stranger, played by Terence Stamp, turns up at the door of a bourgeois Italian family. One by one, the family members become obsessed with his presence and replace their bourgeois morals with revolutionary sentiments. When the stranger suddenly disappears, the emptiness of their existence can no longer be denied.

For this screening, our guest speaker uses Teorema as a canvas to analyse Pasolini’s art-historical inspirations. Drawing on religious motifs and Renaissance imagery, Pasolini weaves a web of visual allusions that lay bare the catechism of capitalism.
